Paving

New paving is paving over a new stone base. In most applications in North Carolina this is usually 2-3” and normally one coat. Due to the success of more durable paving specs in the northern regions of the country, 2 coat paving specs are becoming more popular. Instead of one multipurpose coarse, a 2 course system use a “binder” course usually made up of asphalt with larger gradations of stone which serves as the strength layer. Secondly, a “wear” course layer is added. This typically consists of asphalt with smaller stone and is used to achieve better planarity, increased resistance to moisture penetration and against rutting.
