Can You Install Asphalt Over Concrete?

If your concrete parking lot or driveway is starting to show its age, you might wonder if paving it over with asphalt is a good alternative. You certainly can install asphalt over concrete, however it’s typically not the ideal solution.

As with any paving project, asphalt overlays on concrete do have potential drawbacks, and you’ll want to weigh the advantages and disadvantages carefully. Delve into some of the different elements to consider in these scenarios.

Benefits of Installing Asphalt Over Concrete

Fast Installation

By installing asphalt over concrete, you won’t have to deal with the added time of removing existing concrete. Asphalt is also generally much faster to install than concrete. It has a shorter setting time, meaning your space likely won’t have to be out of commission for too long.

Lower Costs for Large-Scale Properties

It may be more cost effective to install asphalt over concrete as opposed to removing and replacing the concrete.

Better Drainage

Asphalt is generally much more porous than concrete (which is usually designed not to absorb water). It’s easier for water to drain and absorb through the asphalt. This can help lower risks of flooding, soil erosion and runoff in your parking area.

Why Asphalt Over Concrete Is Less Commonly Preferred

Although overlaying asphalt on concrete has benefits—like faster installation and lower upfront costs—the following disadvantages often outweigh those advantages:

  • Reflective Cracking: Cracks and joints in the underlying concrete can eventually cause the new asphalt layer to crack in the same places, a problem known as “reflective cracking.”
  • Potential for Shifting or Heaving: If the concrete base shifts, heaves, or settles unevenly, the asphalt overlay will likely suffer damage as well, reducing its lifespan.
  • Water Infiltration Issues: The above cracking and shifting outlined can lead to water infiltration into your subbase.

Because of these concerns, the asphalt overlay may not last as long or perform as well as a surface installed on a properly prepared, stable base.

When Full Concrete Removal Is Better

In many scenarios, removing the old concrete before applying new asphalt is the smarter choice. Doing so can:

  • Reduce the risk of future cracking and drainage problems,
  • Ensure a more even, stable foundation for the asphalt,
  • Increase the longevity of your pavement and cut down on maintenance costs.

When factoring in the risks and potential repairs associated with overlaying asphalt on concrete, full replacement is often the more cost-effective and reliable long-term solution.

Consult a Professional Before Deciding

While it is technically possible to install asphalt over concrete, this option is usually recommended only in certain situations where the underlying surface is stable and damage is minimal. Or for short term solutions to buy some time before a larger scale reconstruction. To achieve the best results for your project, consult with a professional paving contractor like Raleigh Paving. We can evaluate your property and recommend the approach that ensures maximum durability and value for your investment.
