Asphalt Resurfacing and Overlay in Raleigh, NC

Asphalt resurfacing, also called asphalt overlay, is the most common and economical way to extend the life of your pavement.

Asphalt resurfacing involves adding a new layer of asphalt to your existing asphalt. This will not only help make your road or parking lot look new again, but it will also add life expectancy to the road itself.

Our Asphalt Resurfacing Process

Step 1: Properly Prepare the Existing Asphalt by Addressing Failing Areas
Prior to an asphalt overlay, it is important to address any areas in need of repair. Removal of structurally weak areas and paving with new full-depth asphalt is the proper way to prepare for an overlay. If the weak and failing areas are not addressed prior to an overlay, they can cause cracking and failure in the new layer of asphalt that is placed. Problems such as existing cracks, alligatored/distressed areas, standing or slow water movement, etc. need to be addressed in order for the new overlay to function properly and provide the additional life it should yield.

Step 2: Manage Transitions
Transitions to sidewalks, curb edges, handicap ramps, doorways, etc. should be prepared to accept the new lift of asphalt by edge milling, essentially grinding out a section of asphalt, along them to allow us to tie in smoothly with the new asphalt layer..

Step 3: Clean and Tack Coat
The parking lot or road is swept clean of debris and a tack coat is sprayed on the surface of the existing asphalt. Tack helps the new asphalt course adhere to the old surface.

Step 4: Place Asphalt Overlay
The new asphalt layer is now installed. The average thickness for resurfacing/overlay is 1.5″. Using our state-of-the-art equipment, we install and compact the new layer of asphalt.

Properly constructed and maintained asphalt pavement overlays offer the following advantages:

  • Strengthens existing pavement
  • Reduces maintenance
  • Extends service life
  • Provides safer pavements
  • Improves ride quality and appearance
  • Decreases liability
  • Enhances curb appeal

Considerations

Asphalt resurfacing prices may vary dramatically from contractor to contractor. When reviewing estimates, check to see what every contractor is including. Are they performing any repairs prior to the overlay/resurface? Pay attention to how many square feet or square yards the contractor is intending to repair and/or resurface as well as the depth of the repairs and resurface/overlay. Make sure they give you this information without being vague. Contractors may figure less asphalt thickness to win the job, but you may pay for that in the long run with a shorter life expectancy.

With Raleigh Paving, we can assure you that you’ll get the best job for the best value possible. We’ll explain all of the above details and considerations to you, ensuring that you stay well-informed throughout the process.
